Auto Insurance Information for Drivers
Anyone who owns a car should have auto insurance. It’s the law in most US states, and you need insurance to legally drive. Your car must be insured in order to renew your tag or to take a driving road test.
What is Auto Insurance?
Automobile insurance is insurance coverage for your car and your belongings inside the car. It also provides liability protection. Depending on your policy, it should cover damages you cause to other cars and property during an accident. You can also get coverage that covers damage that’s caused to your vehicle and liability coverage for injuries you may cause in a crash.
Who Needs It?
The short answer is “anyone who owns or drives a car”. A little known fact is you don’t have to own an automobile to need insurance. If you ever drive someone else’s car, then it is your insurance that will cover you following an accident. Unless you’re listed as a covered driver on the person’s insurance, then you should have your own coverage.
How it Works
To find out if you are covered for an accident, file a claim with your insurance company. The insurance adjuster will evaluate the damage, and if you are covered the insurance company will issue a payment. You might get reimbursed or you may be issued a check for what the insurer determines to be the value of your car. If someone else is responsible for the damage, then their insurance (if they have it) will deal with your car.
Types of Coverage
Auto insurance is available in different types, and not all drivers need to carry all coverage. Liability is the most basic level of coverage, and is required in nearly all states. This coverage pays for damages you cause to others in an accident. Collision coverage pays for damages caused to your car, provided the other driver doesn’t have insurance. Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to your car from weather, theft or other causes besides a crash. You might also want to consider other types of coverage, such as uninsured motorist and personal injury protection.
If you live in the US, then you must have auto insurance. Without it, you cannot legally drive a vehicle. The biggest benefit of insurance is that it allows you to legally own and operate a vehicle.
